Chapter 5 by Miss-Emmie Miss-Emmie

Accept the offer?

Yes

"Yes, thank you."

The older guard nods to one of the others. "Take her up."

Asa is allowed through, and the guard guides her in the direction of the mansion. Not far from the gate, he points to a three story building. "That there's a nice inn, if the Baron doesn't offer you a place to stay. My sister's the cook, and lots of folks show up just to eat dinner there." A bit further in, he pointed out a blacksmith. "If you need something fixed, my old mate Glenn runs that smith. He'll get things done cheap."

The guard, who revealed his name was Carver, proceeded to point out his favorite bakery, his mother-in-law's tailor, and a bookstore his wife frequented. Asa nodded politely, making mental notes of the locations, while also scanning the area. The route Carver led her through had a fair bit of traffic. No one seemed to be causing trouble, although Asa kept an eye out for pickpockets.

But since none bothered her, it seemed this might be a safe route to use when heading to and from the Baron's manor on business.

Finally, they ascended the hill the mansion sat atop, and reached the gates. The guards who stood out front had fancier uniforms than the guards Asa had encountered so far. "Baron's private guards," Carver explained in a whisper as they approached. To the guards he said, "I've brought Dame Asa LeRush, who has business with the Baron."

One of the guards held out his hand, and Asa presented her identification. He examined it, and said, "May I bring this in for the Baron's approval?"

Asa nodded, and he went inside. Carver bid his farewell and returned to the front gate.

After several minutes, the guard reemerged from the mansion, and returned Asa's identification to her. "The Baron will see you now."
